Wednesday has broken a few viewership records at Netflix. It is currently the number two most-watched English language series, behind Stranger Things. That’s a strong indication for Netflix because Stranger Things is set to end sometime in the next two years, while Wednesday is a fresh, new show. The series has captivated audiences since it launched in November.

According to Deadline, a renewal for Wednesday appears inevitable. The show’s producers have already begun recruiting writers for a season 2 writers’ room and are considering locations for the second season. The article also mentions the possibility of multiple seasons in the future and states that renewal talks are expected to go smoothly. However, an official announcement regarding Wednesday season 2 is not expected until the new year.
Wednesday’s season 1 finale perfectly set up a second season. The first season ended with Tyler’s (Hunter Doohan) arrest after it was revealed that he was Hyde all along. Though he ended the season in captivity, he appeared to be trying to escape. The fate of Marilyn Thornhill/Laurel Gates (Christina Ricci) is also up in the air, but she is likely also in custody. As Wednesday drives away from her first semester at Nevermore Academy, she receives a threatening text message from an unknown person and notes she has her first stalker. It appeared that the true mastermind behind the plot to destroy the school was still out there.
Gwendoline Christie also hinted at a return in Wednesday season 2. Christie, who plays Principal Weems, gave one of the standout performances in the season. Weems seemingly died in the season 1 finale, but the series may have some surprises up its sleeves. After all, in a series filled with vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures, death may not be permanent. It could even be that Weems faked her death, possibly setting her up to be the villain in season 2.
Wednesday has taken the internet by storm. The series has inspired a viral dance trend, which even Lady Gaga has joined in on, and has catapulted Ortega into a rising star. It was practically a certainty that Wednesday season 2 would be announced sooner or later, and now fans know when to expect a decision.
Wednesday is now available on Netflix.
